Fortescue Kartajirri

Kartajirri Accommodation Village Services

Executive Summary:

Situated in the Pilbara region, Fortescue’s Kartajirri Village primarily serves the Eliwana mine while offering accommodation for local projects. Fortescue’s forthcoming Flying Fish Camp project necessitated the addition of rooms to the Kartajirri Village to accommodate project personnel. Fortescue engaged R-Group to deploy services for these additional rooms and also to upgrade Kartajirri’s entertainment system with the latest Android solution.

Consequently, this custom village entertainment and communication solution has resulted in an enhanced user experience for personnel by implementing Chromecasting capabilities and facilitating connections to family and friends back home.

The Challenges:

  • Consistency in entertainment and communication services across multiple Fortescue sites, with varying infrastructure configurations and different technical challenges.
  • Isolation and working away from home can be challenging on mental health and well-being – being able to connect with family and friends in downtime
    is crucial.
  • Reduced ongoing maintenance and consistent serviceability across the sites.

The Solution:

  • R-Group’s site-based team was contracted to design and install new headend infrastructure, where required, to over 1000 rooms across the site.
  • Reconfiguration of existing Wi-Fi network to support personal wireless casting.
  • Replacement of outdated set-top boxes with new Android solution.
  • Failover system, which allows the system full dual redundancy for its entertainment and engagement platform, meaning personnel will not experience
any interruptions to their service in the case of a network outage.
  • 24/7 local customer support, with a dedicated regional service team where issues can’t be fixed remotely.

The Results:

  • Fortescue Personnel across sites now have access to a vast selection of entertainment options from blockbuster movies-on-demand, casting, free-to-air, and more.
  • Ongoing proactive management of onsite infrastructure for increased efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
  • Delivery of consistent messaging across multiple sites, such as Weather, Health and Safety, and much more.
  • Provision of ongoing services for 24/7 support and maintenance.
  • Reduced costs through the reuse of the existing access network for a new entertainment system to support personal casting.
